CAMPAIGN PIERCEING THE MASS:
Vermilion! Turmeric! Clothes! Gifts! Money! People crowd... Are you thinking of a ritualized happy ceremony? Then you are absolutely wrong. These are the matters which are commonly found on the streets as a part of campaign, as the state is facing local body elections in this month. All the political parties are are striving hard for their utmost success through huge investments and attractive methods for getting the attention of the voting crowd. But is it really working?
These campaigns are highly expensive, which are being done in the main roads and circles. It has become a hazard for traffic causing traffic jams and slow moving traffic troubling the citizens. Moreover, these canvassing programmes include a large number of people even the women and children by providing them with meals and money. The supporters rather than being a follower using the occasion for profit making.
Cases are reported that many unknown campaigners have thrown the packets of vermilions and clothes in the front yards of the locked houses. Many women are seen distributing pamphlets along with customs and traditions. But is this the democracy need? Are elections the part of customs and rituals? Democracy urges for development where elections are the tools for the way to progress. The campaigns should be development oriented than troubling the people. The elections must show the path for a dreamed development through able representatives than the creation of mere believes over the innocent voter’s right???
